EMDR stands for eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing and has been recognised as one of the leading, evidence based methodologies for working with trauma because the results are fast and permanent.
I describe TRE as the robot vacuum of the nervous system. There is no specific destination when we work with TRE and it cleans up old somatic debris from past experiences big and small. It works just as well with shock trauma as it does with developmental or enduring traumas. The beauty of TRE is that once you learn how to navigate the process safely you can utilise it in your daily life without the need for ongoing therapy.
Did you know that the eyes are the most external part of the nervous system?
So it makes sense that EMDR is a powerhouse when it comes to reprocessing trauma.
EMDR is akin to the telescopic vacuum cleaner of trauma. In preparing for EMDR we identify the issue of concern, the associated memories and the negative self belief that has been internalised for example “I ‘m not good enough” or “I’m trapped” or “I am powerless” . We are then able to neutralise the memory and negative self belief along with embedding and strengthening more affirming beliefs like “I trust in my wisdom” or “I am enough as I am”.
It is truly phenomenal to see how much can shift with the right kind of preparation.
I frequently use TRE and EMDR in partnership. In EMDR we are raining somatic content into the realm of awareness and feeling and having to stay stuck in the next scheduled session can be highly unsettling for some people. TRE is an excellent technique to gently continue the momentum of change and regulation between sessions supporting trauma recovery to be even faster and more complete.
